How to Measure Your Walking Stick

A walking stick that is the right height helps you stand tall and keeps your wrist, elbow and shoulder comfortable. It takes about two minutes and you can do it at home.

Measure it yourself

  1. Put on your everyday shoes. The heel height changes the measurement, so wear the shoes you walk in most.
  2. Stand up straight. Stand tall with your arms relaxed by your sides. Ask someone to help if you can.
  3. Find the crease of your wrist. This is the line where your hand meets your wrist.
  4. Measure to the floor. Measure from that crease straight down to the floor. This is the height the top of your stick handle should reach.

Write your measurement down in both inches and centimetres, then compare it with the height shown on the product page.

Check the fit when you hold the stick

  • The handle should sit level with the crease of your wrist when your arm hangs straight down.
  • When you hold the handle, your elbow should be slightly bent, about 15 to 20 degrees.
  • Your shoulders should be level and relaxed, not lifted up towards your ears.

Which hand to use

Most people hold the stick in the hand opposite the leg that is weaker or sore. If a doctor or physiotherapist has given you advice, follow that first.

Between two sizes?

An adjustable or folding stick with adjustable height lets you fine tune the length yourself. We can also cut most wooden sticks to size for you. Tell us the length you need when you order.
